Drug and Alcohol dependency extends well beyond the health, mental and emotional wellbeing of the individual using. More often than not it impacts and destroys relationships, families, job opportunities and finances. Dependency is not prejudice; it occurs in in all types of people, age, and backgrounds. The one underlying link that people do have in common however is they all need help to overcome the disease.
Often it is very difficult for people to understand the complexity of a Drug or Alcohol dependency. Because dependency is a disease that affects the brain, many struggle to understand why people cannot just stop. People fail to realise that over time, without treatment, the structure and function of the brain is damaged, stopping the ability to think and act rationally. This leads to compulsive drug seeking behaviour, which is near impossible to stop. Thankfully, through drug treatment and recovery clinics there is an opportunity to counteract the destructive hold of dependency and successfully regain control back.
Recognising and accepting there is a problem, that needs treatment, is a major and essential step forward. The important thing is to take action, to get started.
